"Greetings, this is the inbox of Princess Allura. While I am grateful that you have reached out to me, I unfortunately cannot answer you directly at the moment. But if you leave a message and wait a tick, I will surely get back to you!"

[ you went mad.

he had suspected, of course, from the conversation with shiro. spending time within the field for long periods, or interacting with quintessence for longer than necessary, will drive you insane. it was what happened to honerva; her constant studying of the rift had driven her mad, lost to insanity by the time she had given birth to lotor. and in his quest to save her, zarkon had gone down the path of madness as well.

he had thought them both weak. stupid, in retrospect. lotor was brilliant, and he knew the risks, and he had calculated for every possibility. he knew what would happen if he remained in the rift. so why did he do so? why. there had to be some reason, something that pushed him to the brink of stupidity, in order to crush voltron. why would he kill the paladins? or attempt to harm allura? none of that made any sense, even now, knowing what they know now. knowing about the alteans.

killing them would solve nothing. nothing. but . . .

haggar following him. watching him, constantly. allura betraying his trust, that surely happened, as well. going from the universe supporting you, finally being on your side, to having nothing at all would likely cause some level of desperation. lotor thinks highly of himself, but he knows his flaws, and he knows what dives the knife deepest. but that? it felt impossible, contrary to everything he would do, because lotor swore he would never become them, because deep down, his motivations have always been true.

the universe was worse off, due to zarkon. lotor was supposed to be better, but like father, like mother, like son. driven insane by the very thing that was supposed to save them all. his reign cut short due to his own weakness. pathetic, weak, and foolish, and idealistic to a fault.

in the end, zarkon was right. he should have never been granted the throne in the first place. ]
