HISTORY: outline of show episode-per-episode | character biography
PERSONALITY:
As the last female Altean alive, Allura doesn't simply hold the title of being the Princess of Altea, but she also must bear the weight of her people's legacy on her brow, a fate far more heavier than her crown once entailed. To her, even though the complete and utter annihilation of her planet and race had happened over 10,000 years ago, after being induced to a cryogenic sleep by her father in order to save her, the loss of Altea is still fresh in her mind and thus, affects much of Allura's character. As such, Allura presents herself oftentimes with a maturity far beyond her years. Having been (presumably) trained at a young age as a future ruler, Allura is a skilled diplomat and tactician, taking her role as the remaining royal of Altea very seriously, and proving to be a very sufficient, worthwhile leader in the wake of her father's death. She is unafraid of facing dangerous situations, and plays an active role in the team, even before she became a paladin of Voltron. She is not the sort of person who will sit back and allow others to do work for her, but will instead insist on taking charge in dangerous missions herself, even when her safety would otherwise be compromised. This isn't to say she has a death wish, but that she is someone who will act on her responsibility even if others worry for her safety on her behalf. For example, she does not hesitate to land on a large animal-planet known as a 'Balmera' to help escort its natives to safety -- even if that means diving headfirst in the midst of a firefight. She is unafraid of sacrificing herself for the greater good and for those she cares about, as evidenced where, under duress and knowing that there was no way for both her and Shiro to escape when infiltrating a Galra ship, she sacrifices herself to ensure her friend's safety. She is a young woman able to make tough decisions, even if they are emotionally taxing. Allura demonstrates the ability to steel herself and go through with it, if it means success for the mission at large.
However, Allura is not entirely straitlaced or even as levelheaded as she attempts to put on. For starters, while it may seem that she takes herself and her role as the Princess of Altea seriously, Allura is still a young woman, and her personality still reflects the levity that comes with youth despite seemingly losing everything. She knows how to have a good time, and she is a personable individual that, while she is the leader of the team, she is also capable of being her teammates' friends as well. She is kindhearted and warm in personality, and, provided that a person is not working for the enemy or a former enemy, she often does give strangers the benefit of the doubt and would be the first to try to approach a potentially hostile situation in a diplomatic and kind way. As evidenced above, she is hardly a pushover, but will not be the sort of person to intentionally antagonize anyone either (unless, they of course, started it). She can also be easily excitable and enjoys playing games, and she's often shown playing with her space mice companions.
Allura also can be a bit brash in personality as well. As Princess, she is unafraid to speak her mind, and can sometimes even come across a little blunt (after all, upon waking up after 10,000 years of cryogenic sleep, she still has it in her to comment on how 'ugly' Lance's ears are). Just as she is someone who is able to make tough decisions, she is also someone who will tell it like it is. Allura also sometimes reacts poorly in tense situations that catch her off-guard, a fault which is constantly improving throughout the canon, and although she presents herself as the leader, and as someone who can hold it all together and who knows what she's doing, the reality is...she doesn't know everything, and it frightens her. She is someone who tries to remain strong so that when others look to her, they see a paragon of strength in a time of strife, and it is a personal sacrifice of her own emotional stake that she implements on herself. However, by being rather guarded in her emotions, it can oftentimes backfire. She misses her father dearly, to the point where she was easily manipulated by her father's corrupted AI, and it's incredibly obvious that the loss of Altea is a constant emotional strain.
In Season 1, and much through Season 2, Allura is shown to be very hateful and distrustful to the Galra, to the point where she can't even bring herself to trust anyone of the Galra race regardless of their alignment. She pigeonholes them into a singular category of being inherently untrustful, even when she meets Galra of the Blade of Marmora, a group of Galra resistance fighters fighting against Zarkon and his Empire. This quite visibly affects her relationship with one teammate, Keith, someone she has grown close to and trusts. When he and the others find out about his Galra heritage, Allura is shown being distant and angry at Keith for being Galra, continuously questioning whether she should trust him, or flat out ignoring him and shutting him out completely. It is clear that she is grappling with herself with her past feelings towards the Galra as a singular enemy, these new discoveries at having been exposed to a resistance group and, more importantly, with the knowledge that someone she cares about and has come to see as family has Galra lineage. Eventually, she finally comes to accept that her anger towards the Galra has blinded her. She realizes that it's not "what's in your blood" but that it's "who you are that counts." She makes amends with Keith, apologizes for how she has treated him, and is later shown working and fighting alongside the Galran resistance fighters, showing that while she is still determined to beat Zarkon and put an end to his Empire, she is willing to put aside her differences and acknowledge that her anger towards a singular race is a detriment, and that she was wrong to judge. This is later echoed with her alliance and budding friendship with Prince Lotor.
Throughout the course of the canon, Allura's role in team Voltron is changed circa S3 when she becomes a paladin of Voltron. She experiences the struggle and growth that comes from being a new paladin, having to learn how to fly her Lion and fight alongside the team as a team member instead of as a commanding Princess in a Castle-ship. She develops into someone who is now more open to turning to others for help and being less stubborn about expressing her doubts and emotions, allowing herself to be more emotionally open and available than she had been in the past. While she continues to struggle with her position, she is no longer forcing herself to shoulder the weight of the responsibility herself and others have placed upon her. She also continues to learn how to see shades of grey, having come into contact with an alternate reality where Altea was not wiped to oblivion, and in fact had succeeded in procuring "peace" throughout the galaxy, but in a very manipulative and wrongful way by removing free-will of any individual that shows dissenting thought. She begins to understand more where her father was coming from when he sent the Lions away.
In short, Allura tries to epitomize what is expected of her as not only being the last of her species, but as the leader of the group of people who will, hopefully, save the galaxy. She is diplomatic, tactical, and serious, but also kind and youthful. Sometimes her emotions get the better of her even when she tries to steel them away, and in truth...she's still hurting from the loss of her entire way of life. However, she tries her best to remain a pillar of strength, while turning to her friends and loved ones in times of need.
CANON POWERS:
>super-strength (example: able to throw grown men & human-sized robots with ease)
>minor shapeshifting (example: able to change her height & skintone to better blend in)
>energy (quintessence) based healing (example: she was able to heal a planet-sized creature by tapping into her life energy. this does leave her in a weakened state depending on how much energy she needs to use to heal)
>energy (quintessence) based magic (example: has been shown to be able to sense dark magic, uses her energy to pilot a whole ship, was able to infuse a giant mecha robot with enough strength to break through a powerful gravitational pull, was able to shoot lightning energy after absorbing a fellow Altean's magic, etc. in canon she has promise of becoming a very strong Altean alchemist thanks to her trip to Oriande)
In-game, all these powers will be moot, and she will only be as strong as someone who’s trained for heavy combat in a way that’s impressive for a girl her size, but not impossible. So she could probably bench press a full grown man if she really wanted to (though why would she....), but not be able to throw them.

MAGIC ABILITY:
Allura will be able to summon the Altean guardian spirit, the White Lion. The White Lion can only be summoned once per day and once it has served the purpose of its summoning it will disappear. When summoned, it can only serve the single task Allura has summoned it for. These tasks are limited to three forms: Mount, Defender, & Healer.
1) if it is summoned as a mount, it can only be used as a mount. this is the only form where it appears as a corporeal body and is about as big as a polar bear. it can't attack or defend beyond trying to avoid oncoming attacks, and if physically/magically attacked it will disappear. it will disappear when Allura dismounts and wills it away, or when the time limit of its summon is reached, whichever comes first.
2) if it is summoned as a defender, it will be ghost-like and act similarly to a patronus in Harry Potter where it can't physically harm an enemy but be used as a distraction and as a guard to diminish attacks targeting Allura or an ally fighting alongside her. it will disappear when Allura wills it to disappear, if its time limit is reached, or when its energy runs out. this uses some of Allura's own well of quintessence (energy) and the longer she tries to will it, the weaker she will feel over time.
3) if it is summoned as a healer, it will come in a ghost-like form to help aid in the healing process and disappear shortly after. this summon is also tied to Allura's quintessence and acts as a bridge between her and whoever she seeks to heal, so Allura will also feel very woozy/weak following the healing process depending on how much healing needed to be done. the lion's healing ability is tied to Allura's own health.
ANY WEAPONS/MAGICAL ITEMS?: the Blue Bayard of Voltron. it's technically magical but takes the form that best suits its wielder, which for Allura is an energy whip. It will remain in this form, but will retract when not in use.
ANY PETS?: Allura has four pet space mice but since she's allowed only one, she will have her mouse friend Platt who is a big fat yellow mouse. He's not magical but does share a special bond with Allura where they can communicate telepathically. I do hope to keep this telepathic link in-game but will understand if it's not allowed.
